Trout are strictly coldwater fish, and ponds may get too warm for trout, unless a steady flow of cold water enters the system. The majority of commercially raised trout are grown in raceways. Trout may also be raised in spring-fed ponds, tanks or cages. Many commercially raised trout are harvested at a size of 10-14 ounces. With proper conditions (management, water quality and feed), trout can reach market weight in as little as 10 months. Trout will grow to several pounds in size and some producers grow trout to large sizes for sport and specialty markets. The water temperature and food quality will greatly impact the growth of trout.
